Churches discuss future

by David Rogers-Smith

On a Tuesday night in March, 85 people gathered in St Barnabas' Anglican Church hall in Scottsdale for a meeting called 'Exploring the future together: a conversation between Christians of North East Tasmania toward greater unity and cooperation'.

Local Mayor and member of St Barnabas' chaired the historic meeting of members of all the Protestant churches in the district.

The Anglican Parish of Dorset requested the Conversation so they could inform the other churches of the parish's current deliberations about its future and to explore the other churches' willingness to work together more across the district in the delivery of pastoral ministry and services and in mission.

Numerous people spoke from each of the seven denominations and there was a strong desire for greater unity and cooperation. Conversations towards this end will continue across the district and among the members of the local Ministers' Fraternal.

The meeting concluded with earnest prayer and supper.
